Labor and Delivery Suites 101

Understanding Labor and Delivery at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital

At Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital (FMDH), we are dedicated to providing a safe and comfortable environment for expectant mothers. Our labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum (LDRP) suites are designed to support you throughout your birthing journey, offering a private and welcoming space for you and your family.

What to Expect in Our LDRP Suites

Our LDRP suites are equipped with essential medical equipment, including fetal heart monitors, adjustable birthing beds, and emergency response tools. These features ensure that both mother and baby receive attentive, high-quality care throughout labor and delivery. While we do not have obstetricians or anesthesiologists in-house at all times, our team is trained to respond quickly and efficiently to any medical needs that arise, with access to necessary specialists when required. In addition to medical care, our suites offer amenities to enhance comfort during labor, such as adjustable lighting and ample space for movement. We also offer tools such as birth balls, peanut balls, and jet tubs to enhance your labor experience. We encourage mothers to bring personal touches, such as pillows or music, to create a more relaxing environment. Our goal is to provide a supportive setting while prioritizing the safety of both mother and child.

Personalized Birth Experience

Every birth experience is unique, and our team is here to support your preferences within the scope of available care. While FMDH does not offer a selection of birthing suites or alternative birthing centers, our staff is committed to working with you to create a positive and personalized birth experience. Whether you choose pain management techniques such as epidurals or prefer natural labor methods, we are here to provide guidance and support every step of the way.

Postpartum Care and Support

After delivery, our team continues to provide compassionate care for both mother and baby. Immediate postpartum care includes newborn assessments, assistance with breastfeeding, and maternal recovery support. We have lactation consultants available to help new mothers with breastfeeding and newborn care. Our team is also available to answer any questions and provide guidance as you transition into parenthood. We provide new parents with nationally recommended postpartum education resources to support them after discharge. Our booklets cover essential topics like breastfeeding, postpartum recovery, and newborn care for the first few months. Plus, they include QR codes that link to helpful videos, making it easy to access additional guidance whenever needed.

Preparing for Your Stay

We recommend that expectant parents pack a hospital bag with essential items for both mother and baby, including comfortable clothing, personal toiletries, nursing supplies, and baby essentials such as blankets and outfits. While we provide basic necessities, having familiar items from home can enhance your comfort during your stay.

Emergency Preparedness

As a rural hospital, we understand the importance of being prepared for any situation. While we do not have 24/7 in-house obstetricians or anesthesiologists, our staff is trained to handle emergencies efficiently. In the event of complications requiring advanced medical intervention, we have established protocols for timely patient transfers when necessary.

Insurance and Financial Assistance

Understanding the financial aspects of childbirth is important. We encourage patients to check with their insurance provider regarding coverage for labor and delivery services. Our team is available to assist with any questions related to billing and financial assistance options. Contact our Financial Counselor at (406) 228-3633.

At FMDH, we take pride in providing high-quality maternal care in a close-knit, rural setting. We focus on personalized, compassionate care tailored to the needs of our patients. Our goal is to support you through a safe and positive birth experience, right here in Glasgow, Montana.
