Giving to the FMDH Foundation
Your Options to Give Back
The options are endless when it comes to picking a charity and how you want to support their mission. Besides cash gifts, the Frances Mahon Deaconess Foundation is open to receiving stocks, bonds, and annuities. Some donors prefer to name the FMDH Foundation as the beneficiary on life insurance policies, IRAs, or have remembered the FMDH Foundation with bequests in their wills. See planned giving for more information. Each of these helps build the FMDH Foundation’s assets.
Currently, the Foundation has four funds to give cash donations, memorials, honorariums, and so on:
- General Endowment: These funds allow the Foundation to purchase much-needed medical equipment for FMDH and other community organizations. We have purchased EKG machines for FMDH, bladder scanner for Valley View, Game Ready Systems for Hinsdale and GHS, and exercise equipment for Nashua Senior Center. Funds are invested and only the interest and dividends are used to purchase medical projects for FMDH and other community organizations.
- Markle’s Ambulance Fund: This trust helps support ambulance services in Glasgow, Hinsdale, Ophiem, and Lustre and was set up in 1989 in memory of Tom & Florence Markle. This fund started with $20,000 and is now over $220,000.
- Scholarships Fund: The Foundation gives out scholarships to second-year college students who have graduated from a Valley County high school. These funds have been set up in memory of loved ones that want to help local area students pursue their medical dreams. Many of the memorials have been made by families of employees that believe in the future of FMDH.
- Mammography Fund: This fund was established to help purchase a 3-D digital mammography machine in 2012. It was started in 2010, when the Foundation pledged to help the Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital raise the funds necessary to purchase a Hologic digital tomography machine. This new technology allows the FMDH Radiologist to view breasts in a 3-D image, thereby allowing improved identification of potentially cancerous areas. We reached our goal at the end of 2012 and the digital machine is now serving FMDH patients. We will continue to have this fund to help with future expenses and make sure our patients receive top of the line care.
Contributions to the FMDH Foundation are tax-deductible because the Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Foundation staff will ensure that you receive proper receipts to use with your tax records as well as a year-end statement.
Other Ways to Support The Foundation
Timing is everything, and sometimes our budgets don’t allow us to help in the ways we would like. If the mission of the FMDH Foundation is something you feel strongly about, consider serving on the Board of Directors.
